Elder abuse is a serious issue in the society nowadays. And it remains as hidden in most of the situations. As a social service worker, I am really concerned about my society. A social service worker has a major role to protect the victims from these kinds of circumstances. So I have to learn more about such situation. Thus I will be able to handle abusers. This article says a lot about how to handle an abuser as well as to protect the victims. Because, it creates so many issues in victim’s life. Today, many of the senior citizens face the abuse. But most of them are so embarrassed about the abuse and they won’t talk about the incident. Because recalling the incident really hurts them. Many elderly people are abused in their own homes and in facilities responsible for their care. Especially if the abusers are their loved ones, seniors won’t be willing to reveal the issues. So that, they can protect their family members. Thus the senior neglect will remains as a hidden epidemic. This is the apt situation where a social worker has to do their responsibilities. A social worker has to encourage the vulnerable people to overcome these kinds of circumstances through many ways. Otherwise, this will negatively affect in one’s life. Social isolation, mental depression, suicidal tendency and various health problems are some of the after effects of the senior neglect. Thus the final years of the elderly can be hell. A social worker should avoid this situation through legally and by training the geriatrics to handle this situation. Social service worker has the right to question this situation and to report to the authorities.
