Summary
The mental health issue I have chosen to do my research on is Dementia, the social group I have chosen to support my research is the Elderly. From my research I hope to gain a better understanding and some knowledge of how Dementia may affect the lives of those who suffer from it and those around them.
I have decided to write about the Elderly suffering with Dementia as Dementia is a common mental health condition. According to the National Health Service, Dementia is a common mental health condition that affects around 800,000 people within the United Kingdom. (National Health Service, 2013).

There are many different types of dementia, the most common type is Alzheimer’s disease. There are many signs of dementia, one of them being becoming very forgetful and confused, this includes forgetting people’s names, who they are, forgetting where they live or how to get home. When the mental health issue Dementia gets worse people can suffer from sever signs and symptoms, this may be later on once they have been diagnosed with the illness. There is no cure for Dementia, however there are treatments that will help slow the mental health condition down and enable people to live with their condition, cope with it better and live a positive life (Dementia Care, …show more content…
Community nurses aim to develop strong working relationships with carers and people with dementia while living in their own homes. They provide face to face advice, care and support when needed.
Social services help arrange community care and assessments for the elderly with dementia to keep a close eye on them and to assess the specific needs they may have, they will also discuss how they feel their needs can be met. Social services are not allowed to refuse to meet an identified need because it may be expensive. There are eligibility thresholds made by social services, (NAO,2007)
General Practitioners are there to offer support to people with dementia this includes information on where to go to get advice, different ways to cope with the illness and live a normal life, medication and treatment advice and they also can refer patients to specialist organisations and other services that may be able to help and advise them better, (Alzheimer’s Society, 2013).
