Part A: Clinical Assessment
The character for this paper is Elena Gilbert from the Vampire Diaries series. Elena’s adoptive parents, Grayson Gilbert and Miranda Sommers-Gilbert died in a car accident on May 23, 2009. At the time of her adoptive parents’ death, Elena was seventeen and in ninth grade. Also, she has a 15-year-old brother, Jeremy Gilbert, and their legal guardian is their aunt, Jenna Sommers.
Elena came to the clinic accompanied by her aunt. While Elena was at the clinic, she was mostly quiet. Her movements were slow and there was a minimal expression on her face. She dressed casually and appeared like she just woke up from bed. She reported that she has been sad for a year since her parents’ unfortunate demise in a car accident. The death of her adoptive parents had taken a toll on her emotions. People who have schizoid personality disorder always seem to be alone. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., text rev.; DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association, 2000), people who have schizoid personality disorder are detached from the social environment, express minimal feelings when they’re with others, prefer being alone, have narrow interests, and show coldness. Compared to Elena’s behavior, she matches the description of the criteria. First, she doesn’t enjoy social contact anymore. Second, she doesn’t share her feelings with others. Third, she is always alone in her own world. Fourth, barely anything interests her. Fifth, she wouldn’t actively respond to her friends and family.
