A transit of Venus is when the planet Venus passes between the Sun and a planet with an orbit outside Venus’, which causes Venus to appear as a black disk moving across the Sun. Usually, this phenomenon repeats every 243 years. Rittenhouse was so excited when he observed it on June 3, 1769, that he passed out for a few minutes. He published his meticulous account of the event in the American Philosophical Society’s Transactions. He then used the observations to calculate the approximate distance from the Earth to the Sun as 93 million miles.
