Elliot Aronson created the method of jigsaw classroom and his primary reasoning for this was that his classroom was too segregated between the students of color and the white students. Aronson found human psychology along with human behavior and human interactions very interesting. He started his college career at Brandeis University where he received his bachelor’s degree and went on to get his masters at Wesleyan University. After eight years of school, he felt that he needed to get his Ph.D. in psychology so he traveled to California and got his Ph.D. at Stanford University. This way they must learn to listen to one another and make sure that they get all of the information for the lesson from their peers. Also when the teacher is assigning the leadership role for the group, he/she should pick the student that they feel will be able to keep the participation of others to an even level. That means that the leader isn’t allowing the same person to ask questions every time, they will try to encourage other students to chime into the conversation. With the students who have different learning abilities the best way to keep them involved is to make sure that the leader of the group, as well as themselves, is encouraging them to participate regularly. Make sure that they know, even though they might work at a slower pace, that they are just as important as the smartest person in the group and without them fully engaged the group will suffer. Students that have an advanced level of learning can sometimes find themselves bored with the activity so to keep them involved the teacher should remind them that they can use this activity as a teaching opportunity. They have the chance to be the “teacher” when they are presenting the information they received from their expert groups. For the students who have more of a competitive mentality, group members should remind them that they are working together trying to achieve the same goal. These students will soon realize that its not a competition and in order for them to do the best they must work with their other group members.
