John became one of the first people to combine hip hop with the piano. Although it took many years for him to gain fame, he never gave up. Eventually, his willingness to move on paid off in the end. Songs like “Rocket Man,” Bennie and the Jets,” and “Tiny Dancer” were just some of his many accomplishments. “Rocket Man,” perhaps one of the greatest songs ever created, is an example of how a few lyrics and a piano can be transformed into a masterpiece. This song definitely told a story. The lyrics portray the story of a person in space. The song also portrays his loneliness and how he misses home and his family (www.azlyrics.com) . Coincidentally, this song did come out in the 70’s which was around the same time space exploration was popular. Perhaps this song added a sense of even more popularity
What is interesting is the tone of how the piano is played through the song. As the story was being told, the piano played rather a constant “soothing” set of notes. There weren’t many (if any at all), notes that were considered “random.” Whether the purpose was to add a sense of drama to the song or not is up to the interpreter. He released his own album called “Crocodile Rock”, which included fast paced, yet “soft” notes being played on the piano with a combination of lyrics. Although it wasn’t necessary, he taught himself how to play the piano. 4 years of age is quite young to learn such a sophisticated instrument.
