The emancipation process granted freedom to the slaves in the confederate states if the states didn’t return to the union by January 1, 1863. Once the slaves escaped the control of the confederate government by running away or through advances of federal troops, the slaves became legally free. When it came to the emancipation process it broadened the goals of the civil war. Slavery was a major thing that started the war but Lincoln’s only mission at the beginning of the war was to maintain the union.
