In his essay, "Embraced by the Needle", physician Gabor Maté examines the factors that influence people to use drugs. The paper informs the reader of the effects of certain drugs as well as reasons that would drive a person to want to experience these effects from the drugs. Maté argues that addiction is not bred from the drug itself, but instead from the feeling of abandonment or neglect at a young age. Maté presents personal anecdotes and scientific evidence to support his thesis. However, he generalises patient experiences in order to fit the narrative of childhood trauma, and does not address drug abusers who use for fun, and does not explore other possibilities for turning to drugs as an adult.
