Emily Dickinson secluded herself inside of her father’s estate for the majority of her life. Well known for her poems, Dickinson wrote many dark poems. Many of Emily Dickinson’s poems revolved around very specific themes, “death, suffering, love and God” (F, Sophie). Though there are few that have a light hearted tone, the majority of the poems have a much darker or even sinister tone. This contrast leads the reader to believe that she has depression, specifically Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD.
SAD typically occurs in the fall and winter months, and lifts during the spring and summer months. She had much more activity of writing her poems during the spring and summer months. Emily Dickinson shows symptoms of having SAD that was reflected
