In this section of the novel Emmett Till’s mother recalls her side of the story and how it all took place and how the unfairness and the corruption of a society keen on keeping African Americans as second-class citizens led to her son’s murder. The quote she so candidly told Emmett parallels to the Black Lives Matter movement’s constant slogans used at protests when confronting the police brutality that has taken the lives of so many unarmed, harmless African Americans; examples include “hands up, don’t shoot” and “I can’t breath”.
