Emperor Hong Wu, was born with the name Zhu Yuanzhang on October 21, 1328 in the Zhalong Village. He grew up in a very poor farmer family with seven older siblings, but many were given away due to being unfortunate. The age 16 was hard for Zhu. His families land were flooded by the Huai River, then a plague killed his parents and siblings except for one brother. This horrible event left Zhu an orphan. Listening to his father's request, he went to become a monk at a Buddhist Monastery. But, he was then forced out into a life of a wandering beggar. Zhu later returned to the Monastery where he learned how to read and write, he stayed here until he was 24.
After his beloved Monastery was destroyed by an army, Zhu joined the rebellion against Mongol Yuan Dynasty in 1352. Surprisingly, he became a commander and joined The Red Turbans rebellion. Zhu then was in charge of one of the many groups trying to overthrow Yuan. In 1356, Zhu’s army conquered Nanjing in which turned to their capital base. Now, central and southern China was under the control of rebel groups by 1358. After the Red Turban splitting, it left Zhu becoming leader of the small Ming Dynasty and larger groups like Chen Youliang was in control central Yangtze. Conjoining together, Chen Youliang and Zhu fought for territories that were under The Red Turbans control. This war included “ The Battle of Lake Poyang,” which was the largest naval battle in history. This war lasted for about three days and then came to a close with a defeat and retreat of one of Chen's armies. After Chen's death, about a month later, Zhu didn't fight in any battles and stayed in
