During the stage of middle adulthood, adults will go through what is called the empty nest syndrome. The empty nest syndrome is a syndrome when parents start to have feelings of "unhappiness, loneliness, and depression due to their children leaving the home" (Feldman, 2017, p. 525). Their children has left the home to either start college, begin a new career, and get married leaving parents to deal with the fact their children are now grown up and becoming independent.
