I believe that the author does support the claim that the proof is scant because of the price, what is in the drinks, and the scientific studies done on the energy drinks.

The price of the energy drinks are very expensive and costly. For and average price of around three dollars you can buy one 16 ounce energy drink. Where you could buy a tablet of NoDoz for 30 cents which has about the same amount of caffeine. As said in the article by Barry Meier “Even Starbucks coffee is cheap by comparison; a 12-ounce cup that costs one dollar and eighty five cents has even more caffeine.” which shows the costs of energy drinks compared to Starbucks which is often known as a very expensive coffee company.
