English 1102 Reflection

It was the beginning of the 2012 fall semester when I attended my first English class in over ten years. I enrolled at Georgia Perimeter College with the plans to get a degree in dental hygiene. It didn’t really matter to me that I was a high school dropout with only a GED. I was there to learn, and I was starving for knowledge. I came from a broken home, and higher education was never discussed when I was a child. As an adult I see myself as an achiever, far too motivated and curious about the world to settle with just a GED.
I learned a great deal during my first semester, and from then on I knew I was headed in the right direction. My expectations for this semester are similar to previous semesters. More specifically, in my English 1102 class I expect to improve my writing abilities; as well as learn to distinguish certain themes or ideas from literary works. I came upon the latter expectation in our first week of class as we discussed the topic of psychological interpretation of literature. It is amazing how far I have come, and yet I still find new things to learn every day.

I took my time picking out my English 1102 class, and I researched all of the professors. I wanted a professor who is passionate about literature, and engages their students in a way that encourages them to think beyond the textbook. I also knew that I needed a professor who is structured, and requires a lot of active participation. I learn best when I have to apply what I’ve learned consistently throughout the semester. I am confident that with hard work and dedication this English 1102 class will meet all of my expectations. The first week’s reading assignment was a great
