During the Old English period, the most important contributor towards the literature of the time would be King Alfred the great. He reigned from 871AD to 899AD and was widely known from preventing fall of the Anglo-Saxon provinces to the Vikings by arranging alliances with them. He was also convinced that wisdom gained through study would allow those in authority to act effectively, because of this he set up schools for future priests and children of nobles and he also encouraged his court nobles to copy his actions of reading and study.
