Enslaved people usually were fed corn meal, lard, some meat, molasses, peas, greens, and flour. The slaves were given this food by their slave masters on every Saturday. Sometimes, the slave owners would supply fresh produce to add to rations from gardens and vegetable patches. In the morning, the meals were prepared and eaten during the afternoon in the slave cabins where the enslaved people lived. The days during the week, the meals were prepared by an older man or woman no longer able to do the labor in the fields. The enslaved people also had a diet high in fat and starch which led to ailments, such as scurvy and rickets. Enslaved people in all regions typically did not have nothing to eat. The clothing were made by the slave women on the plantation and given clothes by their slave masters. The clothes given to the slaves were distributed by the slave master, usually one time a year and sometimes at Christmas time. The clothing was divided and assigned according to gender and age as well as to the labor performed by the person who wore it. For instance, children had no clothes most of the time until they became an adult. But many male and female enslaved people wore two cloth shirts until they turned fifteen years old. Also older enslaved people who could not do the physical labor were not given extra layers of clothing and shoes during the winter that younger enslaved children were. . The shoes that were most worn by the enslaved people red brogans with brass toes. Women usually wore turbans and the male slaves would wear straw hats whenever they had the time to make one. Whereas many other field workers were not given the right amounts of clothing to cover their selves. However, house slaves tended to be dressed properly with more
