In the introduction of the second article it states, “Textbooks and classroom lesson plans are starting to present a more clear-eyed view of America’s history. They are slowly recognizing the violence that happened when European settlers encountered the indigenous, or native people of the so-called ‘New World.” This quote was chosen because it shows that the key details of America’s history about indigenous people has been overlooked by today’s society. The two articles, “Settlement: Indian Slavery in the Americas” and “Colonial America Depended on the Enslavement of Indigenous People” analyze the effects of slavery on both indigenous populations and the colonists are absolutely different because the indigenous population was succumbing to the colonists, whereas the colonists were able to succeed. …show more content…
For example, in the middle of the first article it states, “In order to get it, they persuaded the Mohegan and Narragansett tribes to help them fight the Pequots. In 1637, they burned a village on the banks of the Mystic River in southeastern Connecticut, killing 400 to 700 Pequot…,” which shows that because the indigenous people turned on each other, the Pequot were slaughtered and enslaved. Also, on paragraph 6 of the first article, it states, “But ordinarily Europeans, especially the English and French, purchased their American Indian slaves from other Indians” which shows that the indigenous population will betray their own kind to save their own skin because they didn’t want to jeopardise their own lives, so they victimize other natives. Close to the conclusion of the first article, the author states, “...but the trade moved westward where Apaches, Sioux, and others continued to be victimized by the Comanche and the others.” which supports my example above about the natives becoming slavers because they didn’t want to risk their own blood of becoming
