The conflict between rock climbers and environmental advocates over the regulation of climbing areas has been an ongoing one. Environmental advocates, in some cases, have managed to put restrictions in place that prevent or make it difficult for climbers to scale cliffs as they wish. While there is some merit to the environmental argument, many of the restrictions that environmentalists choose to impose are unreasonable. Sometimes unreasonable regulations can prevent rock climbing from taking place entirely. An example of a restriction that commonly affects climbing areas is the banning of fixed anchors and bolt hangers. The Access Fund is an organization founded by climbers, the goal of which is to “protect climbing access and the integrity of America’s outdoor climbing areas.” Despite what environmental advocates believe, organizations like The Access Fund prevent the environment from being hurt as opposed to damaging it themselves. The Access Fund, in particular, encourages climbers to be mindful of their impact. They consider the integrity of environment around climbing areas to be a necessity for an area to be accessible to climbers. Although its promotion of environmental awareness is important, their largest impact when it comes to protecting the natural state of climbing areas is their ability to purchase private land when it goes up for sale. Often when a piece of property goes up for sale, it is bought by companies and developed for their purposes. When this happens, a part of the natural landscape can be lost forever.
