The main idea of the first three verses in Ephesians 2:1 – 10 is that before Christ saved people from their sins and fleshy desires, they were essentially dead. Being dead in sin is not a stance that someone takes, it is the behavior that someone develops because of the desire to fulfill sinful desires and cravings of flesh. The one person who gives us influence through our flesh and others flesh is Satan. For those people who decide to show interest in these desires of flesh, are actually following Satan, and those who consistently talk about giving into those fleshy desires. In verse eight, God gets a strong grip and holds on to our faith, and gets us to safety. He does this because of His gracious nature, but if we don’t have faith in Him then we are not saved or pulled to safety. In the second half of verse eight the word gift is being referred to as the salvation that is given to us by God, instead of us receiving salvation through a performance based salvation concept. In verse nine, faith that is being talked about in the second portion of verse eight is basically us taking the initiative to reach out to God for guidance and help, because we know that there is an underlying knowledge in mind and our hearts that there is hope. The concept of hope links together with faith, which that comes from hearing the message. The message from God helps give encouragement reach out for faith, once that is done, we are then saved. In verse 10, as believers we are not saved by our works, but it is because God transforms believers into people who passionately, and willingly want to do good works. It is seen that we have security in Christ not just because we are trying to make ourselves a good person, but there are unavoidable things that happened; that allow us to put our faith in
