The Grendel’s of Today While people may not be Germanic warriors boasting and going around slaying monsters, it does not mean people are not facing their own monsters. People today face psychological, financial, and/or personal problems. Which to some it may be worse than ripping monsters apart and slaying dragons. Everyone has their own demons and fears that need to be confronted since that is the only way of resolving them. Since each person has different conflicts and fears in a way everyone has their own Hero’s Journey because just like Beowulf they have to defeat their own Grendel’s, his mother, and ultimately face their own dragon. For many people this is the most difficult to overcome, since it can symbolize the person’s worst fear or dilemma. Hence a personal problem and most people deal with personal problems by themselves. Beowulf taking his armour off is like a person deciding not to get external help with their internal issues.“...unarmed he shall face me if he dares” (Heaney 684). This can also be interpreted as a self-given test to see how physically and mentally strong and stable one is. Many people want to see what their limit is and see if they can push it even further more. Which is what Beowulf is literally doing he has enough confidence in himself that he knows he can defeat Grendel unarmed and unprotected. Ultimately Grendel’s fight is the journey to self help, this is where someone seeks outh their personal problems and resolves them. It can also be someones battle grounds to see how capable they are. This is the journey to self discovery is where one finds out who they really are and what they are capable of. Therefore it can either make or break the
