Voices of Freedom: A Documentary History is a book compiled of many primary sources, written by people who lived in America during the corresponding times, that address a theme of American freedom. For each primary source the author, Eric Foner, gives his personal touch through a headnote and questions that surely raise interest in the corresponding topics. The book ultimately brings up the idea that as society changes with time, the concept and meaning of freedom and liberty also change. In the Preface, Foner makes it a point to announce that the history of the United States is partly a story of debates, disagreements, and struggles over the concept of freedom.
