In those last few days before Hitler went into the bunker, those people who were close to Hitler noticed that he was not quite the same as usual. One of these people was a man named Erich Kempka. Kempka was Hitler's driver in Berlin during his time in power. He testified many times over the years to the Allied leaders that he had played a very important role in Hitler’s suicide. Before the Russian army moved into Berlin, Hitler ordered him to go out and bring back two hundred liters of gasoline. Why would Hitler ask for that? The testimony of Hitler’s personal secretary answers that question. Hitler was a paranoid sort. He thought that if he were faced with death or capture he would choose death immediately. Heinz Linge was in charge of Hitler’s security at the end of the war. He tells the story of how he found Hitler dead in the bunker. The way he tells the story sounds a little something like this. First, as stated earlier, he told his driver to get the gas. That was step one. Step two was that he told his personal assistant that he wanted to be cremated after his death to avoid public embarrassment. After that Linge walked Hitler and Braun to the Furor’s personal wing of the bunker. Hitler ordered to not be disturbed. The chief, doing his job, followed that order and left them unattended so that he could stand guard. Several minutes ticked by and then Linge heard a single gunshot. Even more time went by and then Linge went back to the Furor’s room where he had left Hitler and his wife. He wanted to check on their condition. The room was quite. That is the most common wound for people who commit suicide with a gun. The weapon was found on the floor near Hitler’s right hand side. Again, most suicides by right handed people end that way. Braun was a bit less brutal. She was found on Hitler’s left side. She was lying face down on the same couch on his shoulder. There were no signs of a struggle. Both parties died without any signs other than that of suicide. Linge took the Hitler’s body out of the bunker and took him and his wife outside the emergency exit and into the garden. The garden, coincidentally, was a spot that Hitler had been seen walking around more and more during his last few days. Hitler’s driver, Kempka, his Chief of Security, Linge and two unnamed soldiers dug a trench, covered the two bodies with the two hundred liters of gas and burned the bodies as they had been asked to
