Trade formed the United States into what it is today, and the Erie Canal is a large part of the growth of trade in America. This man made river allowed for efficient trade and travel from the atlantic ocean to the great lakes and eventually to the mississippi. This would ensure New York, and New York City as the financial and trading centers of the U.S. for centuries to come. However this entire project would not be possible without the support and backing of Dewitt Clinton, a New York City mayor, New York governor and unsuccessful presidential candidate. Dewitt Clinton was born on on March 2, 1769 in Little Britain, New York. He was Nephew to the then current Governor of New York and had a natural introduction to politics at at an early age. He would start as a U.S. Senator and work his way up through the ranks of bureaucracy all the way up to Governor of New York. Some of his initiatives included public education for all and Public welfare. After the war the project was reconsidered and accepted for funding, Clinton was also appointed as the commissioner of the project. In about a year after he was appointed as commissioner he was also elected governor of New York. This would mean that Clinton could have as little push-back as possible when constructing the Erie Canal. This water system would connect the Hudson River in New York to Lake Erie through the Mohawk River, an offshoot that goes about halfway between Lake Erie and the Hudson
