Ernest Hemingway dealt with pain immensely and ultimately shot himself in the head to escape his agony. Since the idea of pain was so prevalent in his life, it became a recurring theme in some of his accounts. Masochism became a factor in the majority of his stories. Masochism is the idea of a person enjoying pain through physical or mental endurance. The subdivisions of masochism that were referenced include suspense and pain (Schoenberg, Trudeau 190).
Most of his heroes suffer greatly from pain in each of their respective stories. This is shown in A Farewell to Arms, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, To Have or Have Not, The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and the Sea. The physical pain from all of these stories includes shrapnel in the leg, arms
