Error has unfortunately been viewed as an enemy for several years, especially in healthcare. What is not realized is that error is can be a significant driving force for change leading to the possibility of success. Error can be seen as a teacher to assisting in a crucial role of analysis, development, and implementation of best practices (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2018). Of course, certain errors that have the potential to harm life should be avoided or at least minimized, but even in these situations, valuable lessons can be learned. If there is a pattern of errors, the leader may not be open to learning the lessons that the error is attempting to teach us (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2018). One of the tremendous mistakes a leader has the potential to make is allowing for the errors to be repeated.
As leaders in healthcare continue to grow and develop their leadership skills, the value of error needs to be appreciated and valued; however, this simple task of appreciating and valuing error may not be easy accomplished.
