Morales grew up living with his mother after both of his parents got divorced. His mother was the one who had the biggest influence on his life while he was younger. Until the age of five years old, Esai grew up only speaking Spanish. He graduated high school in New York’s School of the Performing Arts and in 1977 co-founded the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts to advance the presence of Latinos in media. His first professional performances were in theater and television.
Esai Morales doesn’t talk about what specific religion he believes in, but he does believe that there is a God. He also believes that God works through us to create the unimaginable.
