This setting is critical to the development of the Maze Runner because the characters in the story have been trying to escape for quite along time. Each time they have failed and in severe cases, somebody has died. Such as when they tried to escape through the Box hole and somebody got sliced in half by a mysterious force or object . That taught them not to try to escape. So when Thomas and Minho suggest escaping, nobody believes there is a way to escape, so they reject it. Even if they knew there was any way to escape, they probably wouldn't have gone because the Doors stopped closing and grievers were everywhere. So when they finally decide to escape they go out,they decide Thomas and Teresa should try the first escape because they figured
