Vaccination is the most traditional and widespread mode of influenza prevention and control although antivirals that target specific proteins of the influenza virus are also significant for preventing influenza or for treating hospitalized and severely ill influenza patients during the early stages of a pandemic when an appropriately matched vaccine isn’t available (Hurt, 2014). As well as standard contact and droplet precautions, hand-washing with soap and water or alcohol based band rub does decrease the quantity of influenza A virus found on the hands of health care workers making it imperative in order to reduce the risk of nurses passing on the virus to other patients within the nursing home (Blanco, 2016). Data has revealed that the elderly are at a higher risk of getting worse cases of influenza, it was concluded that in ages 75-85+ influenza occurs worse in males (Wong, 2016).
