Esmeralda Ceja's Goals After High School

While some students grow up with expectations of what colleges they should attend to keep up a family legacy, others see college as a way to refine and reshape their predetermined paths. I had the opportunity to interview a high school junior, Esmeralda Ceja from a rural high school in California. She shared with me a little bit about her parent’s minimal education and their occupations as field workers. She mentioned how her parents we not really involved in her education, but supported her in just about everything. The only expectation they had for her was to not work in the fields like they did. Since she entered high school, she has been part of different clubs, such as Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (M.E.Ch.A), California Scholarship Federation (CSF), and her schools Debate Team. She has also held leadership positions and is currently her class Vice-President. Along with that, sports have also become a huge portion of her high school experience. Since her freshman year, she has been involved in cheer, basketball and now most recently volleyball. When talking about her extracurricular activities, she mainly focused on her basketball experience; she mentioned how basketball was a way to distract her mind from everything else that is going on in her life. It is an escape that helps her balance everything out. She has received several awards such as Defensive Player of the year and Most Valuable Player for basketball, and the Most Spirited Award for cheer. Even though, she does not consider herself to good basketball player, her extracurricular involvement suggests she is an outgoing individual; as a result a spirited and athletic school would be a good match for her
