In order to stay with the family, Esperanza had to pretend that she was cousins with them, but in reality, she was not related to them. They took them to their small house that the owners of the ranch have given them to live in. Everybody that came from Mexico would work except for Esperanza. Esperanza and her mother set up their belongings in the room they were given that they would share with one of the children who already had been living there. The next day everybody went to work while Esperanza stayed home with the the babies to help out. She had to memorize how to take care of them because in the following days, the girl who was helping her would go to school for the whole day and wouldn’t be there to help her.
