El Hierro is the youngest island of the seven Canary Islands. It is the smallest one and it is situated at the south-west of the archipelago. Since 2000, El Hierro has been declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), 60% of its land is protected.

Canary Islands is an archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean and it is one of the seventeen autonomous regions of Spain. It is formed by seven islands, as I already said, and it is divided into two provinces: Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas. III. ANALYSIS AND DEVELOPMENT

El Hierro extends 278 km2 of land and reaches 1500 meters. It is a mountainous island and it is surrounded by cliffs, except in the capital, Valverde, where there are wooded slopes that meet the ocean. All around the island, there are lots of villages. Their economy depends on tropical farming like bananas and pineapple, and on subsistence agriculture.

The island is divided into three different municipalities: Valverde, the capital, El Pinar and El Golfo.
