Here are some things you may or may not know about one of the most celebrated female gospel singers of all time.
1. Caesar was born with 11 siblings. Her father was a tobacco worker and is more popularly known as a lead singer in a gospel quartet. She first started performing with her father’s group at the age of 10.
When her father died two years later, she started touring with LeRoy Johnson, an evangelist who also had a television show in Virginia. Caesar recorded her firs song at only 13 years old while she was still studying in high school.
2. When she started singing, the Jim Crow law was still in effect in the state of North Carolina. This affected her music career and restaurants would put up a closed signage every time she arrived. She is dubbed as the Queen of Gospel and is one of the gospel singers who has the most powerful voices. Her gospel style of music and sermon includes her speaking the gospel message and an injection of a bit of acting.
Caesar travels around the world to perform and preach. She’s toured since she was at a very young age of ten. Every time she performs, she always brings the audience to their feet.
6. Some of the members of the Caravans made a name for themselves in the industry of gospel music. Ceasar collaborated with James Cleveland and recorded several songs together. They were eventually recognized as the King and Queen of Gospel.
She created her own group named the Caesar Singers but she also occasionally reunited with the Caravans and Reverend Cleveland throughout the years.
7. In 1971, she won her first Grammy Award and it was the first time a black female gospel singer won a Grammy since Mahalia Jackson. Caesar went on and won several more Grammys in her career. She earned a total of 7 Grammy Awards.
