1920s vs 1930s
For many Americans, the 1920s was a decade of prosperity and confidence. However, there were drastic changes economically, politically and socially through the course of 1920 to 1930. Which turned for Americans lives into a nightmare and what once was the land of wealth, prosperity and huge pride had become the land of desperation. Even though there was a lot of changes in these two decades there were also similarities and differences between them. As the 1920s began we noticed a change in our nation. The economy began to grow as most people had jobs and also started to have better working conditions which increased the standard of living in the United States. According to Document 5a it says “Stock prices had been going up pretty steadily… the average guy was starting to hear about friends making $20,000 or $30,000 overnight.” This is telling us that people became more interested in the stock market and borrowing money which allowed people to have what they wanted quickly and investing in the stock market to make more money faster. However in the 1930s there was a big difference, according to Document 6 after the stock market crashed in 1929 things changed; unemployment increased, banks failed and annual income and spending decreased. This was known as the Great Depression were people could not afford to spend in new products any more neither could they fund their basic needs. Overall in the 1920s it was seen by many as a great moment in our economic history, while in the 1930s was seen as the opposite. Although in the 1920s and 1930s there were differences there were also similarities. For example for the African Americans in the 20s things were changing, according to Document 3 it says “And this general idea helped feed the concept of The Renaissance.” This is telling us that the cultural life of the African Americans flourished into what its known as
