The Profession of Arms
The Secretary of the Army and the Army Chief of Staff had three questions they felt were necessary to understand where we, as an Army, stood in this era of conflict and constant change: What does it mean for the Army to be a Profession of Arms? What does it mean to be a professional Soldier? After nine years of war, how are we as individual professionals and as a profession meeting these aspirations? “I am an expert and I am a professional...” This is part of our Soldier’s Creed. We learn this Creed as newly recruited Soldiers, but do we truly know and understand what it means? Many professions have their key elements that make it fairly easy to distinguish what duties they perform and what their area of expertise is; the military is one of those professions. Having a profession requires years of practice and studying before finally being an expert in your field. Having not just efficiency, but effectiveness is crucial in the work of any professional. It is extremely vital to maintain the senior and strategic leader relationships, otherwise the deployment of when and where capabilities are needed can result in catastrophic outcomes. The Army’s culture and climate balanced with its institutional practices has a massive influence on all Army professionals. This can have near and/or long term effects throughout the profession as far as the service Soldiers see themselves performing and whether they see their duty as a simple government job or a calling. These balances are necessary for the American people, just as much for the Soldiers, in order to know they have an active and honorable Army ready to defend and protect the future of their sons and
