Confederate monuments Although some of these monuments have a bad back story to them. They still are a part of our country’s history. I think it is interesting to learn about the downfalls and also the good times that happened throughout American history. Some of these monuments are being taken down due to the fact that they have offensive stories behind them. Many people agree that they shouldn’t be destroyed due to the fact that they are important lessons of what happened in the past, so history doesn't repeat itself. For example, the confederate flag was taken down from government buildings because of a white supremacist man going into a church and killing 9 African Americans. What is usually missing from these statues is the context of what these statues really stand for and the history behind them. By adding these plaques to the statues people will be able to learn about the history that happened in there own community. A group called the United Daughters of the Confederacy built monuments to promote the “Lost Cause” which was to promote the Civil war in a more favorable way.
Next, A history professor from The University of Maryland of Baltimore County said "To leave them as they are is in many cases a giant middle finger to the communities in which they sit."
