Endometrium is the outside lining tissue in the uterus, which responds to hormones secreted by the ovaries to cause menstrual bleeding. Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial like tissue is lining the outside of the uterine cavity. This tissue can cause bleeding similar to menstrual bleeding. The outside of the abdominal and pelvic cavity consists of peritoneum, which is very sensitive and irritated by the presence of blood. This results in inflammation and adhesions of the tissue, which causes severe pelvic pain and infertility in women of reproductive age. Studies show that the signs of endometriosis appear to look like powder-burns or gunshot lesions on the peritoneum and ovaries. It can also present itself as cysts on the ovaries. These cysts are called Endometriomas, which are cysts, filled with thick reddish brown substance commonly known as altered blood and resembles chocolate, giving the reason why the medical field refer to them as chocolate cysts. This disease is hard to diagnose with just a simple physical exam, so if an individual has any signs or symptoms they should probably advise their physician to do and ultrasound, which can pick up on the presence of cysts, but also to do laparoscopic testing, because this is the best way to diagnose this disease. Treatment for Endometriosis is personalized according to the severity of the disease. Nonsteroidal and anti-inflammatory drugs have shown to be effective in reducing inflammation and easing the symptoms of pain. These drugs are only effective if taken several days prior to a menstrual cycle.
