Opioid overdoses and drug overdoses are going up each year. Although the war on drugs continues to be ramped up under this new administration and the previous administration, it has shown us that the war on drugs has been nothing but a racially biased failure. Drug usage and deaths have continued to go up while more and more minorities continued to get locked up even though caucasians and people of color use drugs at the same percent.

It seems locking up a health condition has not worked at all. Instead what it has done is leave a generation of African Americans and Hispanics with criminal records, unable to find work, unable to vote (although some states have been more lenient), and unable to get proper treatment for their addiction. And lately we have been seeing people of color getting off of death row because they have never committed the crime they are on their for. How do we continue this policy? Why are we expanding it? How is more killing going to stop the opioid crisis? Perhaps if we just killed every drug criminal there would be no drug crimes, but is that who we are as a nation?

The constitution says ‘no cruel and unusual punishment.’ That was put there for a reason. Peoples actions are based on emotion and if we acted on emotion for every issue, we would be a barbaric society. We would be like France during the French Revolution chopping off every law breaking citizen’s head because they one way or another hurt us.

The death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment. Just a few weeks ago, Doyle Lee Hamm faced execution. He had cancer and they could not find a usable vain. A team decided to jab him for hours and hours to find a usable vain. They went into groin a six times, punctured his bladder, and penetrated his femoral artery. He had marks all over him.

The crime he committed was horrible and he caused the family tremendous amounts of pain. He deserves a harsh punishment for the pain he caused. I don’t feel bad for him for this because of what he has done. But we have to stay true to the constitution. This is cruel and unusual punishment and this is not who we are as a
