“There had grown up tacitly among the biguns the opinion that Piggy was an outsider, not only by accent, which did not matter, but by fat, and ass-mar, and specs, and a certain disinclination for manual labor.” (Golding, p. 91) Piggy’s character is best described in this quote. He was the most intelligent person on the island, but was disregarded because he didn't fit in with the other boys. He was overweight, had asthma, and wore glasses. Piggy’s character throughout the novel remained mostly static with his nature remaining almost unchanged. With Piggy’s unique qualities and reasoning, he played a big role in the novel's theme and plotline.

First of all Piggy guides Ralph in the beginning of the text. He tells Ralph to use the conch shell as a device to call meetings as show in this quote. “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us—” (Golding, p. 20). Throughout the text he continues to give Ralph good ideas for surviving on the island. By doing this Piggy represents the intelligence and rational thinking on the island. Besides Piggy’s thinking, his glasses also play a big role in the plot. “I know. They didn’t come for the conch. They came for something else. [...] Far off along the bowstave of beach, three figures trotted toward the Castle Rock. [...] From his left hand dangled Piggy’s broken glasses” (Golding, p. 242). This quote shows the importance of Piggy’s glasses in the plot. The glasses have the ability to create fire and who even possess them has that power.
