Selena could not speak spanish and learned spanish lyrics for her songs. She was coached by her brother who wrote her songs. She also took spanish lessons in the early 1980's so she could project a more genuine Hispanic image during interveiws on spanish language radio. In 1987 , when Selena was 15 years, she won tejano music awards for best female vocalist and Performer of the year . In 1989 the Latin division of the EMI records album signed the band to a record deal. Selena also won a Grammy award for her album (selena live) and record numerous albums.
Selena's father was a musician and restaurateur. Her father put together a family band that played traditional Tejano music of the Texas borderland. Selena's dad inspired Selena and opened his own Tex-Mex restraunt in Lake Jackson where Selena performed in public with her brother and sister as members of Selena's band. The restaurant went down in the early 1980's because of economic recession.
