*“What do you call a bear with no teeth? A gummy bear!”* Hahahahahaa! Hehehe. Sorry, but we are not talking about gummy bears, instead we are going to learn about SUN BEARS! Sun bears, sometimes called the Malayan bear, are the smallest species of bear alive. They were nicknamed the “sun bear” because people thought that the upside down semi circle on their chest looked like the sun rising or setting. First, after they are grown, a sun bear will find a “wife”/mate and a den to live in. Next, the mother will give birth to (on average) one or two cubs. Then, a mother will care for her cubs for two years, then she will let him/her free. The (used to be) baby cubs will start the life cycle over again. A sun bear is usually black with a yellow upside down half circle at its neck (Many sun bears have this marking, but not all) . The half circle is actually what gave the sun bear its name- sun bear. Sun bears have smooth, short fur. They are mammals that can weigh from 66 to 132 lbs. Sun bears can only get 4-5 feet which makes them the shortest species of bear. Sun bears are also nocturnal, meaning they only come out at night, and they sleep during the day. The average lifespan of a sun bear in the wild is 25 years, but in captivity they can live up to 30 years.
In conclusion, sun bears are a fabulous species of bear. They can rip open hives with their claws, eat a variety of different foods, make a den out of various forest materials, care for their cubs, and even fight off their risk of extinction. Sun bears are the all around best
