The battle of Machias was put in motion on April 19, 1775 after the battle of Lexington and Concord, and during the Siege of Boston. A midshipman that went by the name of James Moore was in charge of making sure that Jones came back with the promised supplies. Three ships set sail two of them owned by Ichabod Jones, the 80-ton Unity commanded by Jones and the 90-ton Polly which was commanded by Nathanial Horton, James Moore dutifully followed both ships in a 50-ton Schooner named The Margaretta which the midshipman commanded himself. The Margaretta was loaded with 12 swivel guns.
On June 2nd, 1775 Jones asked the people of Machias for their signature, so the dispensing of supplies could begin, that contract also concluded that the would protect Jones when he carried the lumber. Though he acquired only a few signatures from the people the majority was decided to not help their British enemy.
On June 6th,1775 Jones called a town meeting, Jones once again tried to change the minds of the people, but the people told him once again that they would do no such thing and that he was welcome to do his business but they would handle everything according to contract. An anger driven Jones convinced Nathanial Horton to move the Polly in a more threatening position. Which in turn caused the people to change their minds, they gave in to Jones request for the provisions and
