Dred Scott Supreme Court Leads to Civil War The Civil War started when the Confederated went to the soldiers at Fort Sumter, North Carolina on April 12, 1861. This war was fought between the Union States, which were the Northerners, against the states of the Confederacy, the Southern states. It lasted a total of five years from 1861 to 1865 and there was many causes and events that led to the start of the War. There was differences between the northern and southern states about slavey, trading and rights. A lot of people believe that the war started because of President Lincoln, leading the south to secede from the Union. However, the Dred Scott Court Case was definitely a significant cause of the war. The Dred Scott Case was against Sanford ini 1857, and was ruled by the U.S. Supreme Court stating that Africans that were brought to the United States and were slaves are not citizens and not protected by the Constitution.
