The Impacts of Industrialism on the United States Between the 18th and 19th centuries, America along with Europe was transitioning from being a dominantly rural country into industrial and more urban like. Industrialism can be defined as an organization of society that is more solely a mechanized manufacturing industry, rather than trading, farming, and doing work by hand. Before the Industrial Revolution took place, people were performing hard labor, working in factories was dangerous and many health risks could come from it, and transportation systems lacked. While some effects of the English Industrial Revolution were negative; industrialism impacted technology, the economy, and society overall. “Before the advent of the Industrial Revolution, most people resided in small, rural communities where their daily existences revolved around farming,” (2). Most Americans worked from home during this time creating their own supply of food, clothes, and tools needed to survive. However, the people that did choose to work in the factories suffered from all kinds of harsh work conditions, especially the poor and middle class. The poor and middle class did not get the advantages to experience what great effects industrialism had on America due to the harsh living conditions, their pay rates, and the life they had working in factories. The intent of the industrialism should have never had an effect on the poor and working class, but there are always downfalls to something good. However, industrialism did create a great pathway for expanding trade, new methods of transportation, and creating different products for profit to increase revenue for America.
