In “The Birth-Mark”, Georgina’s birthmark is often represented as something else using signals such as like or as using a smile such as this one “the crimson hand was brought strongly out, like a bass-relief of ruby on the whitest marble” (341). The bazaar in “Araby” is used as a symbol representing loss of hope. The unnamed boy had high hopes that he would find the perfect gift for his lover but left with nothing. The character Fortunato in “The Cask of Amontillado” is ironically named “the fortunate one” in Italian yet misfortune does come upon in the form of murder.

There are many mentions of bones, crypts, and death related scenery as can be seen here: “Its walls had been lined with human remains . . . in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris” (182). In “The Things They Carried”, the literal and figurative things carried represent the physical and emotional burdens that the people must take with them. Throughout the short story, the burdens upon people show up as emotional scars and the supplies they are forced to take with
