Justin Crane was kidnapped and held in an elaborate Château. Crane then writes about his horrifying and gruesome experience in a journal format. Crane comes upon many mysterious workers, frightening medical deformities, and much more while he is trapped at the castle. The text states, “As we finally came to the door, there was no stopping my profuse sweating and shaking. The servant turned to me, placed his hands calmly at my sides and said: “are you ready to see, my child?” What I encountered next with the most gruesome sight I've ever seen- one straight out of the most sublime of scenes from a Walpole novel. Trying my hardest to hold back the surging vomit in my esophagus, I beheld infected corpses hanging from the ceiling- everywhere. At least ten, perhaps more, males and females, mostly of middle age. The bodies were dangling from great metal barbs; one could consider them as giant-sized fish hooks.” (Marvin, 4). Here, Marvin is describing the haunting experience Justin had encountered. He explains what Justin had saw, felt, and how he reacted. The phrase, “The bodies were dangling from great metal barbs; one could consider them as giant-sized fish hooks.”
