What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?
“Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons.” (Schaefer, 2013) Discrimination can be positive or negative actions toward the objects of prejudice; whereas stereotyping is a generalization about the typical characteristics. Prejudice is attitude toward the members of a group based upon the membership in that group. Stereotyping is assuming a group of people based on looks or what they believe is wrong, just like prejudice believes anyone that is different from you is wrong as well. Discrimination is not all a bad thing, but people make it bad. With discrimination we deny people of things such as housing or employment that could possibly give them the chance to better themselves and family. I haven’t seen firsthand stereotyping and prejudice but have seen it on TV or movies. Hopefully when my children grow up they won’t have to go through discrimination and will be able to do things to better themselves and their family.
What are the causes of discrimination?
Discrimination is everywhere, in our jobs, in our schools and even in our homes. Those children that have learned discrimination from their parents often do it to other children and grow up and continue the behavior because of what they have learned from others. The people who discriminate are ignorant of other cultures and religions. I think it is fear of others that are different from them that makes them want to feel better and higher than others. I have heard from my children about a particular child in school that has been discriminated from other children. Because she is of a different race a lot of the children were saying she couldn’t play with them because she isn’t the same color. I have always taught my children that this is wrong and if they ever see this they need to tell someone. My children and I think that everyone should be treated equal. Apparently the parents of the children who were saying that to the little girl have not taught them about respect and understanding diversity.
