Civil Rights Events One specific civil rights event that took place in the United States that has strengthened the social responsibility of the nation’s government is the Civil Rights Movement that started in the 1950s and ceased in the 1960s. The movement was able to accomplish its main objective of having the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed, along with the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In addition to that, this movement helped the Supreme Court to decide to end school segregation with Brown vs. the Board of Education and encouraged Martin Luther King to fight for racial equality. Prior to this movement, white and black people were still segregated and black people were receiving substandard treatment. People understood that this was unfair …show more content…
In regards to an ethical dilemma, for one thing, republicans often oppose progressive movements that democratic people support, such as gay marriage or abortion. On the other hand, however, democrats tend to support gun control, while republicans usually favor gun ownership. Both of these restrictions and forms of support can aid in ethical dilemmas for the American people. Regarding progressive ideals, republicans can diminish the values of being more accepting in society, such as allowing gay marriage. They generally choose to support biblical text, which is unethical considering the United States was founded on religious freedom and a separation of church and state. The democratic belief of being more progressive increases the accepting values and principles in the American people, while a republic view of society would likely increase a biblical and traditional standpoint, both of which can have positive effects on …show more content…
A democratic would be more in favor of nonviolent solutions to crime. This can help have a positive impact on the American society’s ethical standpoint on capital punishment, the value of human life, and the way in which people should be punished. A democratic view of the death penalty being unethical or immoral allows the people to have more positive and less violent values and principles on how the government deals with crime. On the other hand, republican parties would be more in favor of these harsh, lethal punishments, meaning that it would become ethical for one person to purposefully kill another
