Eurasian watermilfoil is a problem in Minnesota lakes, because it is an invasive aquatic plant. Sarah Roley from the Department of Biological Sciences, and Raymond Newman from the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology, wrote an article entitled, “Predicting Eurasian Watermilfoil Invasions in Minnesota.” Roley and Newman claim that models predict more than 4,700 lakes in Minnesota could potentially “be invaded by Eurasian watermilfoil” (2009, para. 1). Eurasian watermilfoil causes problems such as, outcompeting native plants, improper cover and food for native animals, and people detest it. People should do more to stop the problem that is Eurasian watermilfoil. Eurasian watermilfoil is a problem because it outcompetes the native plants. Eurasian watermilfoil reproduces and spreads very fast. There are several ways that Eurasian watermilfoil is able to spread. The Minnesota Pollution Control agency wrote an article entitled, “Eurasian Water Milfoil.” This article talks about how if a portion of the weed is to break off, it can settle into the sediment, grow roots, and form a new plant. This is a very common way that Eurasian watermilfoil spreads to new bodies of water. A fraction of the weed gets stuck on a boat, trailer, motor, …show more content…
When Eurasian watermilfoil infests a body of water, it is able to reproduce and spread very quickly. The invasive species overcrowds the body of water, takes resources from native plants, and diminishes the population of native plants. When there are less native plants that the native animals need for food and cover, the native animals begin to struggle and diminish as well. As the invasive Eurasian watermilfoil thrives, it engulfs the body of water, and there are less sandy or gravelly areas that certain fish need to spawn. If Eurasian watermilfoil takes over a body of water, the native plants and animals may begin to die
