In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, Junior leaves the reservation to get a better education. However, his community misinterprets his decision to leave as betrayal, and turning his back on the reservation. Sherman Alexie states, “About ten o’clock, as I was walking home, three guys jumped me. I couldn’t tell who they were. They all wore frankenstein masks. According to Jack, Ralph is only good for giving orders and expects the boys to always do what he says. He says he’s not a hunter and therefore he is not a proper chief. Jack decides to betray Ralph and form a group of hunters on his own. During a killing ritual, they think they see the beast whom they’ve all feared since their days on the island. This resulted to violence and they end up mistakenly killing Simon. In the book Night, the author Elie Wiesel writes about his journey and surviving the Nazi concentration camps as a teenager. The environment in the concentration camps were violent. Elie and his father are on a train moving to another location. They are fighting over crusts of bread and some are even willing to kill for it. “ He was holding one hand to his heart. At first I thought he had received a blow to his chest. Then I understood: he was hiding a piece of bread under his shirt. With lightning speed he pulled it out and put it in to his mouth. His eyes lit up, a smile, like a grimace illuminated his ashen face…’Meir my little Meir! Don’t you recognize me….. your killing your father...I have bread...for you too...for you too…’ “ he collapsed. But his fist was still clutching a small crust…. The old man mumbled something, groaned, and died. Nobody cared. His son searched him, took the crust of bread and began to devour it. Two men have been watching him. They jumped him. Others joined in. When they withdrew, there were two dead bodies next to me, the father and the son” (Wiesel 101-102). The prisoners are freezing, starving and dying.
