Examine the relationship between incarnation and atonement, focusing especially on Anselm’s idea of
Satisfaction.
To examine the relationship between the incarnation and atonement, we must really take a look at what they both really mean. The beginning of the book of John says that the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. This was the incarnation of Jesus. Incarnation is continual in that our redemption depends on the reality that the eternal son of God came to us as a man. Meaning if Jesus did not come to Earth as a full human, then the human race is not fully saved. Because Jesus came and became human, and bridged the gap between human and deity, He was able to overcome sin for us. Dying on that cross gave us salvation, but only if we continue to seek Him.

John 3:16 says. “God so loved the world, and gave his only begotten son”. This sacrifice is forgiveness through sin through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Surely there could have been other ways that God could have saved the world, right? However, this self-sacrifice was a true testament of His character of the salvation given. Christ is everything for us and we are to abide in Him permanently. In John 15:5 Jesus says "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” The end of that verse sums it up. Apart from Jesus, we can do nothing. This parallels the atonement. We would not be saved if Jesus would not have died on the cross for our
